What Is Calm Kids Group Therapy Program And Who Can Attend?
Calm Kids is a 12-session skills-based group therapy program for children in Infants and Primary School. The program is being offered by Katy Vidler, Clinical Psychologist. This program would suit children who have difficulties with worry, anxiety, low mood, depression, stress, adjustment, attention, self-esteem, or any child who would like to become more calm and peaceful. A brief interview by telephone will occur to determine if the group program is suitable for assisting your child. If so, then your child may be eligible to access the available Medicare rebate (see further details below).
What Skills Will My Child Gain?
The cognitive and behavioural skills development includes:
- stress reduction skills for body and mind
- mindfulness-based skills
- breathing skills
- listening and concentration skills
- social skills
- visualisation skills
- relaxation skills
- self-knowledge skills
- emotion regulation skills
Psychological education for parents is also a necessary component of the program, along with daily practice tasks children do with the support of their parents.
Where And When Is Calm Kids Held?
Calm Kids is held at Southside Health and Wellbeing, 12 The Avenue Hurstville. The group is comprised of 10 child sessions and 2 parent sessions.
The next available group will begin in Term 3, with a parent preparation session scheduled for the beginning of July, prior to school holidays. The program will run on a weekly basis within the school term. Applications for this group close Friday 27th June.
Infants (K-2) group – Tuesdays 3:50-4:50
Grades 3-4 – Mondays 3:50-5:10
Grades 5-6 – Tuesdays 5:10-6:30
A further group is being offered in Term 4.
What Is The Financial Investment?
Grades K-2 (1-hour sessions) = $40 per session
Grades 3-6 (80-minute sessions) = $48 per session
A rebate of $28.60 per session is available for all children referred under Medicare.
A non-refundable payment for the first 6 sessions is due prior to the start date. A non-refundable payment for the second 6 sessions will be due prior to the 7th session. Payment may be made by cash, cheque or EFTPOS at reception.
What Is The Medicare Rebate And Who Is Eligible?
For children referred by their GP under Medicare, a rebate is available for all attended sessions. Please note that Medicare do not rebate missed sessions. Children with a diagnosis of a mental disorder made following assessment by a GP are eligible for the Medicare rebate. Examples include anxiety disorders, mood disorders such as depression or dysthymia, stress or adjustment disorders, or ADHD. Please note that your child does not need to have a diagnosis to attend the group. Any child may attend, however the Medicare rebate is available only for diagnosed children referred by their GP.
If your child is already having individual therapy under Medicare they are also eligible for 12 group sessions. Please note that following the 6th session, children will need to return to their GP for ongoing referral for the remaining group sessions.
Private Health Rebates
For those not referred under Medicare, you may be able to obtain a rebate through your private health insurance, depending on your level of cover. Please contact your Insurer for further details.
How Do I Enrol My Child?
Please contact reception on 9579 2480 to arrange for a brief telephone interview to determine the suitability of the program to meet your child’s needs. If suitable, please note that places are limited, with priority given to the first to register and pay.
